Present in low numbers at Pureora, seen there 1995, 1997. Seen 1999 and 2001 in beech forest near Arthur's Pass Village. Seen each year in beech forest in Eglinton valley.

ROCK (SOUTH ISLAND) WREN (3)
Seen 1995, 1999, and 2001 near Homer Tunnel, but missed 1997 due to avalanche warnings and bad weather. Does not usually venture out in rainy weather, and can be hard to see well at any time.

Welcome Swallow (1)
Hirundo tahitica neoxena. Common throughout, scarcer in South Island.

(Richard's) New Zealand Pipit (2)
Anthus (novaeseelandiae) novaeseelandiae Fairly common throughout, mostly in poorer back country, but also at Miranda. Endemic subsp chathamensis abundant Chatham and Pitt.

Hedge Sparrow (Dunnock) (2)
Fairly common throughout, especially in South Island and on Stewart Island.

(Eurasian) Blackbird (1)
Common throughout. Seen on lawns.

Song Thrush (1)
Common throughout, not as much so as Blackbird. Also seen on lawns.

FERNBIRD (2)
Widespread in wooded swamps, fairly easy to hear but difficult to see well. Good places are Motuoapa and Waihi areas at L Taupo, brackish swamp at Tautuku Estuary, and the pakihi swamp below Te Anau Downs Hotel.

WHITEHEAD (2)
Fairly common on Tiritiri I and at Pureora, and especially on Kapiti I.

YELLOWHEAD (Mohua) (3)
In serious decline on mainland, with few viable populations as of 2001. Seen Eglinton Valley 1995, 1999 and at Haast Pass 1995. Missed 1997 due to bad weather and cyclical population low and 2001 due to rat infestation in Eglinton Valley.

PIPIPI (Brown Creeper) (2)
Common most of South Island, especially on Ulva I.

GREY WARBLER (GERYGONE) (1)
Fairly common throughout, but often difficult to see.

CHATHAM ISLAND WARBLER (GERYGONE) (2)
Easily seen Waipaua Reserve on Pitt Island, not seen Chatham.

Grey Fantail (1)
Common throughout and rather inquisitive. Endemic subsp common Chathams.

NEW ZEALAND TOMTIT (2)
Fairly common throughout. Endemic subsp common Pitt Island.

NEW ZEALAND ROBIN (1)
Common on Tiritiri I, at Pureora, and throughout South Island bush, especially Fiordland and Stewart I.

Silvereye (1)
Common throughout in bush and edge habitats.

STITCHBIRD (2)
Fairly common on Tiritiri Matangi I; seen each year there. A few on Kapiti, where seen 1995 only.

BELLBIRD (1)
Common on Tiritiri Matangi I, and throughout South and Stewart Is. Attracted by pishing.

TUI (1)
Common throughout in native bush or around flowering exotic plants. Endemic Chatham Is subsp seen 2001 Pitt Island only.

Yellowhammer (1)
Common throughout in open brush country.

Cirl Bunting (3)
Scarce. Seen 1995, 1999, 2001 in or near Kaikoura Cemetery.

Chaffinch (1)
Common throughout.

European Greenfinch (1)
Common throughout.

Eurasian Goldfinch (1)
Common throughout.

Common Redpoll (2)
Fairly common central North Island and South Island, especially Oban.

House Sparrow (1)
Common throughout.

Abundant North Island.

KOKAKO (2)
Seen each year Pureora. Seen 1999 and 2001 on Tiritiri I, where newly-established and now breeding successfully.

SADDLEBACK (1)
Common on Tiritiri I and on Kapiti, where easy to find.

Australian Magpie (1)
Common throughout.

Rook (3)
Seen Miranda area each year, but apparently extirpated in 1999 from Baigent Rd nest colony.
